In 2020, a diverse group of researchers and professors at Columbia University came together to form the Environmental Justice and Climate Just Cities (EJCJC) Network with funding from the Climate School’s Earth Network program. The Earth Network program “provides a framework of support for interdisciplinary collaboration across Columbia University, to promote fresh approaches to research, education and impact on themes related to climate, sustainability and the future of planet Earth.” Networks are three-year working groups that are funded by the Climate School. In June 2023, the EJCJC Network “graduated” from the Earth Network program.
In September 2024, the EJCJC Network will merge into the Environmental and Climate Justice at Columbia (ECJaC) Project, supported by a catalyst grant from the Columbia University Provost’s office. The Project aims to lay the foundations for the creation of a place at Columbia to serve as an interdisciplinary meeting space, incubator, and laboratory to support and catalyze needed research, education, public service, and 4th purpose work in Environmental and Climate Justice.
The merge will preserve key aspects of both the ECJCJ Network and ECJaC Project, including:
- Regular newsletters highlighting ECJ work at Columbia, events, funding opportunities, job opportunities, and alumni.
- Regular Project meetings with Columbia affiliates
- Events surrounding ECJ at Universities
- Advocacy for greater institutional support and engagement with ECJ
